LAW And It's Relevance In the Society.

Law means the whole system of rules, that everybody in a country or society must obey.
The meaning of Rule of Law.
The rule of law means that the action of the government must be according to the law of the land. Government must not act according to their own will or how they feel and must not misuse the power.

                        Principles of Rule of Law

  1. The Supremacy of the Law: This means that the law is the highest authority in the land. The rulers must rule the people according to the law. Both the rulers and the ruled are under the law. Punishment for breaking the law must be given according to what the law says and not according to what the President says. Because the president is not above the law.
  2. Equality before the Law: This means that all persons are equal before the law and the law should be applied equally to all citizens of a country. The law does not respect anybody no matter your rank or position in a society. Everybody is subject to the law and treated equally.
  3. Right to Personal Liberty: This means that the rule of law protects the right of an individual in a society. Professor A.V Dicey calls them the natural rights and gifts from God, and they should be exercised by everybody. These rights makes the citizens of a country happy, and without them life becomes duel and uninteresting.

                      Benefits of Rule of Law

  1. The rule of law ensures the independence of the judiciary. The judiciary is faced with the task of interpreting and preserving the constitution and fundamental human rights.
  2. The rule of law gives all citizens equal protection before the law. Through this way, the rule of law safe guard individual rights and liberty and makes sure that these basic rights such as; Right to life, Personal liberty, Freedom of speech and association, are guaranteed.
  3. The rule of law ensures equality of all citizens before the law and does not offer any special protection to anybody.
  4. The rule of law allows an accused person to choose lawyers to defend him. If the accused cannot afford the services of a lawyer the state would provide one for him.
Offences for which individuals can be found Guilty and Punishable by Law

  1. When a person is found guilty of stealing or taking away another person property, he has  committed the offence of theft.
  2. Members of a cult or group: When a person or a group of people from or join any prohibited association which can cause harm, torment people, rape, the person or persons have committed an offence punishable by law.
  3. Murder: This is a serious offence whereby a person kills another person. If an individual attempts to kill somebody and fails, it is called "Attempted Murder" and it is still punishable by law.
  4. Kidnapping and Abduction: This is a crime by which some people forcefully take some rich and valuable members of our society to an unknown place at gun point. Sometimes the family are told to pay a ransom, usually in form of huge some of money before they are released.
  5. Embezzlement: When a group of people or individual enrich themselves through dishonest means, like diverting public money entrusted in their care to their own account.

In the case of Nigerian politics, under the past government administration lead by the former  President Goodluck Jonathan, the people at the hem of government or politic offices, parted away with government properties and looted public funds. Which were meant for the development of the country, without fear, because there were no implementation of rule of law and Supremacy of the law.
There was so much compromise among the three arms of government, in which corruption was highly celebrated. Which lead to little or inadequate implementation of the rule of checks and balances, effective governance.
Compared to the President Buhari lead administration, where this rules are properly put in place. At least, corruption is now highly being fought, by arresting the looters of government funds. And thereby enforcing serenity in the political system.
Though the economy is still low and inflation still very high, if continued this way Nigeria's economy must come back to normalcy.
